Interactive Mat / Memory Game

Griffey, Julia

The interactive memory game was inspired by the phenomenon of DDR I witnessed when making the documentary in the summer of 2003. I wanted to try to make a game that would get players to use their entire body and interact with other players or observers.

The concept of the game is that players build audio/visual compositions on the screen that are based on the way they move. These compositions can be saved and traded so that players can try to figure out how another has moved.

The game is played with a mat and a hand controller specifically designed for it. The hand controller allows the user to toggle in and out of "mat mode" (playing the game) and "navigation mode," (navigating the application). The design of the mat consists of two concentric rings. When the user is in "mat mode," the inner ring generates different colors and the outer ring generates different beats. When the user is in "navigation mode" he steps on different areas of the mat to make selections on screen.
