Blurry

Spiridakis, Stephen

This film is from a class entitled "Design as Experience" and for this project I was given a piece of instrumental music and then I was asked to create a visual narrative to accompany it. For my piece I again visited the film medium and created a piece that echoes the work of John Cage in that I've used a portrait painting by Chuck Close and blurred it so that it what you see is just an indiscernible blob.

The image is not the only thing that is blurred. I've intentionally buried the vocals and music to create an atmosphere of confusion. As the spoken narrative progresses with the music the viewer slowly the sees that painting is becoming clearer but I never let it come completely into focus. The thinking behind this is to push the viewer into the space and to force them to interact with it and question what is going on with the blurry shape. In homage to artist Bruce Nauman I tried to prolong the blurriness and tried to achieve the delicate balance of making the viewer uncomfortable and intrigued at the same time.
